Friday Round-up 20/7/18: open offices, future-proofing and workplace taboos that need to die

We'll be slowing down the schedule a little bit in the run-up to Christmas.
We'll be slowing down the schedule a little bit in the run-up to Christmas.

First, some housekeeping: welcome to the inaugural Juggle Friday Roundup! Every Friday we’ll be collecting the stuff we’ve been reading, the stuff we’ve posted on the blog, polls and feedback from our community and anything we’re looking ahead to next week. We’ll also be posting our Friday Pub Quiz question – a cultural debate we’ve been having in the Juggle office that you can take to the pub with you – or to the gym, or home to your family, or out with your walking group, or whatever.

Building collaborative office spaces

Early in the week we were intrigued by this article about open-office spaces and how they may not be the best for face-to-face communication and collaboration.

Our thinking on the subject? We’re not convinced that a drop in face-to-face is ALWAYS bad (if you can talk productively via tech, why shouldn’t you?) but one thing that really stands out: people value their privacy and autonomy! Perhaps the solution isn’t to blame the “goldfish bowl” but to simply allow employees to move around and work in the space they feel most comfortable. Extolling cubicles seems like a retrograde move.

We opened it up to the community with our Wednesday Poll, asking: “What’s the best build for a collaborative office space?” We’ll report on the results next week; participate in the poll now if you haven’t already.

On the Juggle blog this week

We offered tips for businesses to future-proof their talent (step 1: make sure they don’t leave…) and Juggle Founder Romanie explored how entrepreneurs like Hermione Way are normalising motherhood at work – and how that change can’t come soon enough.

Friday pub quiz:

That leads neatly on to our Friday Pub Quiz question. Although Hermione Way’s decision to breastfeed her baby while moderating a tech panel was both brave and potentially transformative, we think it’s crazy that something so natural and necessary as breastfeeding is still such a barrier. So our take-home question for you this Friday afternoon:

What workplace taboos need to die?

We could think of a few without breaking a sweat. Comment below or hit us up on social media to carry on the conversation.

Have a great weekend, from everyone at Juggle.

The Future is Flexible.
