Most people would only consider working for companies that offer flexibility

And 10% see no reason at all for going back to the office.

That’s according to a study carried out by our friends over at Tally, a marketplace for flexible office alternatives. Co-working spaces, hospitality venues, cafes — they’ve got it all.

We all know flexible work is the future, so we thought we’d collate the most surprising facts, the crème-de-la-crème of interesting figures, from the report. Here goes.

More than 1 in 10 people see no reason to go back to the office

Fully 11% of Tally’s respondents think going to the office is always unnecessary, while almost 90% only want to go back in to meet their team. Those that are keen to head back to the office just for company events sit somewhere between both groups, at 63%. 

All three figures square with the sense that for most people, the main benefit of offices are the opportunity they provide to connect with colleagues — actual work can be completed wherever it makes the most sense for individuals. Watch out ‘work from home’, ‘work from anywhere’ has entered the chat.

3 in 4 people want to be offered an ad hoc workspace…

… that, crucially, is not their company HQ. There we have it: many people want to work communally at least some of the time, but most still don’t fancy heading to ‘the office’ to do so. Perhaps that’s because it’s a word tainted with grey, boring overtones. Ricky Gervais may be to blame for that.

Similarly, more than half (55%) are so keen to work somewhere outside of their home, but not at the office, that their only criterion is for ‘anywhere with a wifi signal’. We won’t tell them that the Mars rover has one because it might undermine their point slightly.

27% of respondents have a dog

Pets are a surprisingly significant consideration for those looking to work flexibly. Especially if your four-legged furry friend needs more than one walk a day or you live alone, having the option work from home can make looking after them less of an organisational maze.

Almost a third of people have poor work from home facilities

At Juggle, we’re not in the business of merely waxing lyrical about flexible work with no awareness of bumps in the road. Many people (29%) simply don’t have the right set-up to work from home — which conflicts hugely with how many (73%) want to. 

If we are to realise the benefits of flexible work (61% of respondents reported better focus when working remotely), employers need to step up and start offering staff better laptops, office chairs, wifi extension kits and the like.

The takeaways: work from home is here to stay, but work from anywhere might well be the course we’re on. Oh, and dogs need walks.

One final stat from Juggle’s own survey: 82% of employees thought offering flexibility was the best approach companies could take to combat the massive job losses women are facing during the pandemic.
